Always Log Out — Don't Just Close the Browser

When you're done checking your balance, moving funds, or paying your credit card online, it's tempting to simply close the browser tab and move on with your day. But there's a simple habit that makes a real difference to your account security: click "Log Out" before you close the window.

Why It Matters

When you log in to online banking, our servers create a secure session for you, identified by a unique token. That session stays active until one of two things happens:

• You click "Log Out." This sends an instant command to our servers to end your session immediately.

The session times out. If you simply close the browser without logging out, the session can remain active on the server side for several minutes as a safety measure — even though your device itself is no longer showing anything. In other words, closing the browser closes your window into the session, but it doesn't necessarily close the session itself. Logging out closes the door completely, right away.

Best Practices for Safer Online Banking

  1. Always click Log Out to end your session, every time — don't just navigate away or close the tab.

  2. Close your browser afterward, especially on a shared, public, or work computer. If you don't log out, the next person to use that computer could potentially reopen your still-active session.

  3. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) — such as one-time codes or a hardware security key — for an added layer of protection beyond your password.

It's a small habit that takes one click and closes the window of opportunity for anyone who might try to take advantage of an open session. Make logging out the last step of every online banking visit.
